

They agreed to print no more copies, and they negotiated royalties to be paid to Tolkien. Within a year, Ace gave in to public pressure. The "War over Middle-earth' was fought in the popular press, with the publicity contributing to increased sales and popularity. Tolkien conducted a personal campaign against Ace Books in letters to his American fans. To establish a new copyright, Tolkien was asked to submit new material to create a new Edition, and so secure their copyright beyond question.

All three books are complete and whole, the text blocks are all clean and bright, not as darkened as is often the case. No previous owners names or writing in any of the books.

All three books are in Very Good Plus condition with only minor wrinkling and rubbing of the spines. The set consists of a 7th impression of The Fellowship of the Ring, the 6th impression of The Two Towers, and the 5th impression of The Return of the King, all from August and September 1966. The Lord of the Rings, all early printings as noted on copyright page. A set of the 'Only Authorized' paperback's, published by Ballantine in 1966.
